Hindsight is a form of cruelty when applied retroactively to a self that did not have access to it. You made the decisions you made with the understanding you had at the time. The version of you that existed before the lesson did not have the lesson. Holding that version to the standard of the current one is not accountability. It is a punishment applied to someone who no longer exists. Forgiveness here is not exoneration. It is the recognition that growth is not a failure to have known sooner.
