Fear

A man who fears suffering is already suffering from what he fears.

Fear of pain is itself painful. The anticipatory dread of what might happen consumes the same energy as the thing itself, often for far longer, because the imagined version has no end date. The person bracing for a fall lives in tension indefinitely. The person who falls, lands. One of the most effective forms of suffering reduction is simply reducing the time between confronting what you fear and living it.
